Beyond the neoconservative legacy in American counterterrorism policy: from George W. Bush to forever war

Abstract More than two decades after the 9/11 attacks, militarised approach to counterterrorism initiated by George W. Bush Administration remains firmly in place. Growing frustration with these actions has prompted debates on ‘forever war’. This article traces origins of war’ interplay neoconservatism and conservative nationalism Administration, which aimed at preserving American primacy through cultivation overwhelming military power. The Administration’s support for revolution affairs contributed development a more remote approach, helps explain continuities US policies across latter administration as well Obama Trump presidencies. By helping embed ‘common sense’ understanding that further 9/11-style attacks could only be prevented enduring aggressive action against transnational terrorist organisations, shaped evolution policy. specific influence must qualified contextualised, however, because strategic commitment had wider within Administration.
